Interview: John C. Reilly talks ‘Stan & Ollie’

While the names of classic comedy actors Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy may only be vaguely familiar to the newest generation of comedy fans as the new biopic about them hits theaters, that doesn’t mean audiences have never seen the work of the dynamic duo. In fact, John C. Reilly, who stars as Hardy opposite Steve Coogan’s Laurel in “Stan & Ollie,” said fans have experienced more Laurel and Hardy comedy than they’ve realized.

“If you were to ask me even before I did this movie, ‘Is Oliver Hardy a part of your acting?’ I would have said, ‘Absolutely,'” Reilly said in a recent phone conversation from Los Angeles. “I reference him all the time in ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’ There’s tons of Laurel and Hardy in that, from the sounds I make when I get clonked over the head or whatever it is.”

Reilly, who is coming off the global success of his “Wreck-It Ralph” sequel “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” added that comedians and actors all over the world really appreciate Laurel and Hardy to this day because they “figured out some universal truths about comedy.”

“If you look at their work, they don’t talk about who is the president at that time or whatever little story of the day is going on, they talk about the human experience. The quandaries they get in are not tied to a place and time; they’re just the eternal struggles of human being,” Reilly observed. “Even though comedy can be very hard to translate from one culture to another, these guys were world famous at a time when it was not so easy to cross borders with your work … there was a real sweetness and humanness to their work that made it really relatable to people.”

In a separate phone conversation, “Stan & Ollie” director Jon S. Baird said he hopes the film will launch a new appreciation of Laurel and Hardy’s work.

“The love of these guys has gone back a long, long way … Laurel and Hardy’s DNA is throughout comedy,” Baird said. “If you look hard enough for it, it’s there in every act … If you ask all the main comedians working at the moment who their influences are, Laurel and Hardy would be in there. So hopefully this film will reintroduce people to them or introduce people to them because they’ve been so influential and so important to comedy since they started.”

Opening in theaters in limited release Friday and expanding next month, “Stan and Ollie” is not a standard biopic in that it largely focuses on Laurel and Hardy in the twilight of the comedy duo’s career as the two embarked on a theater tour across Europe in the 1950s. With their career in film seemingly behind them, Laurel and Hardy throughout the tour have their hopes pinned on meeting with a financier they believe will bankroll their comeback picture years after the duo dominated the silver screen.

Oddly enough, Coogan and Reilly’s working relationship on “Stan & Ollie” mirrored Laurel and Hardy’s in that they’ve never worked together before when they signed on to do the film.

“If you know their history, they were plucked from obscurity. They were thrown together and didn’t know each other and didn’t have an act,” said Reilly, who has already earned Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe nominations for his role. “They came from very different backgrounds — Stan was from England and Oliver was from Georgia. The fact is, it was almost a decision of convenience on the part of Hal Roach when he lost Harold Lloyd when Harold went off to start his own studio. He was desperate for another act and said, (let’s put together) a fat guy and the skinny guy. It didn’t have any more subtlety than that when he made the decision.”

As a result of that decision, however, Reilly said Roach created “one of the most miraculous performing partnerships in the history of the world.”

“I can’t think of another partnership that was exclusive and had the level of quality over the number of films that these guys had,” Reilly said. “They really created something for the ages.”

Reilly was clearly humbled by the opportunity to play Hardy, and while he didn’t go so far as to say he channeled the comedy great (audiences will likely beg to differ when they see how the actor virtually disappears into the prosthetic makeup used to create Hardy), he felt there were times when he felt the magic coming through. He said he finally had the confidence that his portrayal of Hardy was working when he and Coogan performed the duo’s routines in front of the 400 extras for film’s live theater scenes.

“I looked out at the audience I could see this woman’s face just lit up with joy. We brought so much joy to that person that when I came off-stage, I got really emotional and started crying,” Reilly said. “I was thinking, ‘I may never be Oliver Hardy — and no one ever will — but at least I’m carrying the torch for him, and I’m bringing the same kind of joy that he brought to people.’ That was a moment that I felt, ‘Well, we’re doing something right. We made that lady really happy today.'”

Baird said if Coogan and Reilly had any doubts of whether they could pull off playing Laurel and Hardy, those doubts were erased when “Stan & Ollie” screened for some very discerning audience members.

“One of the major successes of the film was not only showing it to fans, but super-fans; people who have dedicated their lives to Laurel and Hardy. Trust me, there are plenty of them out there,” Baird said. “Also, there are surviving family members, like Stan’s great-granddaughter, Cassidy Cook, who we had at the London premiere. When they say to you, ‘I forgot I was watching actors. I thought I was watching my great-grandad,’ that’s an incredible thing to hear.”

At the movies: The top 10 films of 2018

With 2018 in the books, let’s take a look back at my favorite films from last year. As you probably can tell, films with music – but not necessarily musicals – had a huge impact on me this year.

So, here’s the list, and whether you agree or disagree with the picks, I hope you can agree with me that 2018 was a very good year for feature films. Happy New Year – see you at the movies in 2019!

10. “Incredibles 2″/”Ralph Breaks the Internet” (tie) – Pixar and Disney packed a solid one-two punch with these two animated giants that were every bit as good if not better than their predecessors.

9. Black KkKlansman – Spike Lee’s searing look at at true-life African-American detective (John David Washington) who infiltrates the KKK strikes an amazing balance of humor and drama, despite the film’s deathly serious subject matter. John David Washington (the son of Denzel Washington) is a revelation in the lead and Adam Driver is terrific as his undercover partner.

8. “Vice” – Adam McKay’s dazzling look at the adult life of Vice President Dick Cheney escapes the biopic doldrums with inventive storytelling that rivals his brilliant “The Big Short.” Christian Bale amazes once again as he channels Dick Cheney and Amy Adams is looking at her first Oscar (finally!) as his force-of-nature wife and political partner Lynne Cheney.

7. “Deadpool 2” – Writer-star Ryan Reynolds amazingly ups the ante with this outrageously funny sequel to the 2016 blockbuster – and succeeds.

6. “Mary Poppins Returns” Emily Blunt makes the impossible possible by stepping into the gargantuan shoes of Julie Andrews and making the iconic character of Mary Poppins her own. Director Rob Marshall also proves once again why he’s the go-to filmmaker when it comes to filming elaborately-staged movie musicals.

5. “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” – Even though the film was a miss financially, the stranger-than-fiction true-life story of serial forger Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) was one of the great, previously undiscovered stories of 2018. McCarthy is brilliant in an uncharacteristic dramatic turn, and veteran actor Richard E. Grant is finally getting his due with a memorable role as Lee’s partner-in-crime.

4. “Green Book” – Peter Farrelly, one-half of the Farrelly brothers slapstick comedy writing-directing duo shows his chops for directing drama with this moving story set amid a volatile racial climate in the 1960s. Viggo Mortensen gives a career performance as an ignorant driver of an African-American pianist (Mahershala Ali) on a tour of the Deep South.

3. “A Star is Born” – Just when you think you’ve seen it all from Lady Gaga, the singer/songwriter/musician delivers a stunning performance in the third remake about a falling star (co-writer/director Bradley Cooper) and the subsequent rise of his wife’s career. The film also marks the best performance Cooper has ever given, and his direction, like his acting, could very well earn him an Oscar. Also, film’s signature song “Shallow” has become the first sure-thing Oscar since Adele’s “Skyfall.”

2. “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Rami Malek gives a transcending performance singer/songwriter/musician Freddie Mercury in what is easily the year’s best biopic about the rise to stardom of classic rockers Queen. Despite the fact that the messes around with the band’s timeline, there’s no question packs an emotional wallop throughout, capped by Queen’s landmark performance at Live Aid in 1986.

Focus Features

1. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” – A deeply heartfelt look at the career of Fred Rogers and his PBS show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Morgan Neville’s documentary takes us back to a time not long ago where positivity and love triumphed over negativity and hate. Despite the proliferation of superhero movies in the marketplace, Fred Rogers shows us what a true-life superhero is. The movie could not has come at a better time in country so deeply divided.

Honorable mentions: “The Mule,” “Hereditary,” “Black Panther,” “Christopher Robin,” “A Quiet Place,” “Chappaquiddick,” “Stan & Ollie,” “Ben is Back,” “Boy Erased,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

Most overrated movies of 2018: “Roma” and “The Favourite”

Movie review: ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ is spectacular sequel

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” (PG)

“Wreck-It Ralph” filmmakers Rich Moore and Phil Johnston” take the beloved 8-bit video characters to the dazzling new heights of life in cyberspace in “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” a spectacular sequel to the 2012 Best Animated Feature Oscar nominee. Completely avoiding the trappings that plague most sequels, Moore (director of “Wreck-It Ralph”) and Johnston (co-writer of the 2012 blockbuster) team for writing and directorial duties here – and take the premise above and beyond the arcade that housed the ingenious original film.

In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Wreck-It Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and Vanellope von Schweet (Sarah Silverman) start the movie in the 8-bit video game arcade from the first movie, until a crucial component breaks on Vanellope’s “Sugar Rush” game. With the game console at risk of being junked and leaving Vanellope without a home or purpose, the spunky race car driver and her best pal Ralph travel through the internet to eBay, where the rare replacement part for “Sugar Rush” is waiting to be purchased. But since neither really realize how dramatically different the 8-bit video game world and the information superhighway are, Ralph and Vanellope quickly find themselves on a very bumpy ride.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” has everything fans could have hoped for as Moore and Johnston masterfully envision the inner-working of the internet, from its vibrant, jaw-dropping animation, clever story twists and turns, astute interpretations of the websites and applications that populate the internet, and hilarious visual gags and dialogue. The movie isn’t all fun and games, though, as Moore and Johnston in a non-preaching way expose the vitriol that has been polluting social media in terms that both kids and adults can understand. As a result, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is every bit as entertaining as it is poignant, especially in an age where the world needs to get keep its civility and sense of common decency in check.

As far as the voice cast is concerned, Reilly and Silverman bring just as much joy to their voice roles as the original, and their work is enhanced by the additions of Taraji P. Henson and Gal Gadot to the cast. Perhaps the biggest thing that takes “Ralph Breaks the Internet” to the next level though, is the ingenious addition of Disney’s iconic princesses to the story, where many of the voice stars of the original films including “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Frozen,” “The Princess and the Frog” and “Moana” lend dialogue to their iconic characters.

Be sure to stick around through the end credits as Moore and Johnston incorporate a rip-rollicking ending that could only take place on that crazy place known as the internet.
